FAQ

How is Shaan different from other skincare products?

One of our major principles is to do no harm.  We also harness nature for its healing abilities, so our active ingredients are plant based and organic where possible.  We use the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic database as a guide, with all the ingredients with the lowest rating for toxicity, so you find no harmful additives in our products.   We rate our products as the cleanest you can find.  This is not the case for most store bought skincare products. This is based on the Environmental Working Group’s ingredient hazard score.

Why are most Shaan products unscented?

Companies that manufacture personal care products are required by law to list the ingredients they use, but fragrances and trade-secret formulas are exempt. Fragrance chemicals are the number one cause of allergic reactions to cosmetics — not only to the primary users, but also to those who breathe in the chemicals as secondhand user. Exposure to fragrance chemicals can cause headaches; eye, nose, and throat irritation; nausea; forgetfulness; loss of coordination; and other respiratory and/or neurotoxic symptoms. In some Shaan products, essential oils are used for their therapeutic properties, and as a bonus, they also provide a beautiful scent to the product.

How long do the products last?

We recommend that you use the products within the year, and we hand make the products on a small scale to ensure they are fresh as possible.  Some customers store the balm, serum, hand salve and sunshield in the fridge if they are not using it frequently.

How long before you see a difference in your skin?

Skincare is only one aspect contributing to the health of your skin.  If you have skin issues, there may be other factors at play such as digestion or hormonal imbalances.  Bearing that in mind, it is likely that you may see a change in a month or so of using the products and the skin also improves with longer term usage.

How to use the essential trio?

Although the cleansing bar, balancing balm and nourishing serum can be used separately, they are at their most effective when used together. It is recommended that the balancing balm is always used after cleansing with the cleansing bar. It is also recommended that the balancing balm to be always applied before the nourishing serum.

A suggested usage regime would be to cleanse and then apply the nourishing serum at night, and the balancing balm and moisturising serum in the morning.

If your skin is oily, you may use the cleansing bar more frequently, eg twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening, but always followed by the balancing balm. You can also apply less serum.

If you have sensitive skin or skin issues, it is recommended that you use the balancing balm at least twice a day to calm and heal the skin.

If your skin is dry, you may use the cleansing bar less, and use more serum or apply it more frequently. You will need to use the balancing balm before the serum as it hydrates the skin and works to dissolve the dry ingredients in the serum.

Experiment with the regime to find what suits you and modify to adapt to seasonal and hormonal changes.
